We’re currently spending a lot of time in a community called Ocean View.

During the Apartheid (1948-1994) the government segregated the population of South Africa based on race. They made three main groups that they called ‘white’, ‘black’ and ‘coloured’, where the white were seen as superior to the other groups. The government evicted many of the ‘coloured’ people living in desirable areas, by force so that they would be white-only areas. The ‘coloured’ families were moved to areas with blocks of flats, like Ocean View, some have turned into ghettos. This experience was obviously humiliating and degrading and has left wounds among people in Ocean View. Despite the history and the widespread social problems that this has brought along we always find that Ocean View is a community of generous hospitality, humour and friendship. We’re looking forward to get to know this area even more and learn from the people of Ocean View.

Above is a picture of our team in OceanView with Arly on the bottom right, who has a great vision to see change in his community.

* * *

Under Apartheid rådde rasåtskillnadspolitik i Sydafrika (1948-1994).
