Lomokev

Lomokev

Last Wednesday we went to hear Kevin Meredith, AKA Lomokev, at the Third Floor Gallery in Cardiff Bay.

He spoke about the intriguing journey he has been on with photography. He began in the early ’90s as a photographer at rave nights in London, paid £50 a night to take shots of happy clubbers. After discovering the Lomo LC-A camera later in the 90s, he quickly became well known in the Lomographic world, competing at National and International Lomo Championships, where his quick-fire improvisational photo taking excelled.

Meredith joined Flickr soon after it’s 2004 launch and, thanks to a strong and varied back catalogue of photos at his disposal, gained swift notoriety, with one of his photos (of Imogen Heap riding a bike) appearing on the front page of Flickr.

All of his Flickr exposure (pardon the pun) has taken him in a variety of interesting directions: publishing books, working at Phoot Camp, being featured in The Times, and addressing staff at Google HQ.

In spite of his achievements, he seemed very down to earth and really gave me fresh inspiration and appreciation for the fun that can be had with a camera.

Snowdonia

We went on a trip four hours north to visit friends in Arthog in Wales, in the nationalpark Snowdonia. We had wonderful hosts who taught us about mountain walking, pre dinner cocktails and Nigella Lawson. The thing I enjoyed the most was to find a still lake on the top of a mountain with water so clear that you could drink it and see reflection of the clouds.

I love to swim

Swimming in Småland
There’s an unique sense of freedom to the Swedish summer. While we were there a few weeks ago, celebrating Sofia’s cousin’s wedding, I took the opportunity to revisit one of the places that grew to mean a lot to me last year during our wedding preparations.

The night before we got married, a few of my friends (Dave, Luke and Chris) took me for a late night swim in a lake close to where we were staying. It’s a tradition that began with Dave’s wedding the year before, and which I see as something of a rite of passage, a final blast of your old way of life as another is about to begin.

That particular evening Dave and Luke swam out far, and when I caught up they were contemplating the depths beneath: ‘what creatures could be living in those murky waters?’ We dipped our heads under the water and were immersed in a silent blackness.

This time it was daylight and I had the lake all to myself. As I paddled in, the stillness of the surface was broken by gentle rings.

In the countryside / På Landet

A few weeks ago we had a lovely weekend together with some friends in the little picturesque hamlet Skenfrith close to Monmouth. We were surrounded by hills with sheep, castles, apple cider farms, second hand stores & tea houses run by little grannies! Fairytale like! You simply must go there!

Translation
Our weekends often consist of a longer walk around one of all the nice parks in Cardiff. Today spring-walk = picnic.
