Today we celebrate the National Women’s Day here in South Africa. We’re constantly impressed by the strong and courageous women we meet every day through the Baby Safe, especially in Masiphumelele and Ocean View, where life for many women is filled with hardship. We’re so privileged to work alongside these women and their children for justice and improved life conditions.
One amazing South African woman we’ve gotten to know is Nosiviwe Sokaya. Viwe, as we call her, is a single mum to Oyisa (in xhosa his name means “to overcome”) from Masiphumelele and an excellent co-worker of the Baby Safe Team. She’s got a passion to support women in her community and is hoping to one day become a social worker. Would you like to contribute towards her degree or for Baby Safe to continue to pay her a salary?

Idag firar vi Nationella Kvinnodagen här i Sydafrika. Varje dag imponeras vi av de starka och modiga kvinnor vi möter genom Baby Safe, fram för allt i Masiphumelele och Ocean View, där kvinnors liv kan präglas av en mängd svårigheter. Det är ett rent privilegium att få arbeta sida vid sida med dessa kvinnor och deras barn och tillsammans arbeta för rättvisa och förbättrade levnadsvillkor.
En fantastisk Sydafrikansk kvinna vi lärt känna är Nosiviwe Sokaya. Viwe, som vi kallar henne, är ensamstående mamma till Oyisa (= att övervinna)från Masiphumelele och en utmärkt medarbetare i Baby Safe. Hon drömmer om att bli socionom så att hon kan bättre stötta kvinnorna i Masi. Baby Safe försöker därför samla in pengar till att sponsra Viwes socionomutbildning samt till att kunna fortsätta betala ut lön till henne. Vill du vara med och hjälpa oss att sponsra henne?
Here are some pictures of the new Baby Safe’s with their new design. One is going to Johannesburg and one is going to Swaziland, which are both places where babydumping is a widespread issue. The plan is that one will be installed in Masiphumelele and another one will replace our old safe here in the valley. The one in Johannesburg will go to Door of Hope, a ministry that for several years has worked against baby dumping and inspired the founding of Baby Safe.
Här kommer lite bilder på nyproducerade Baby Safes med ny design. En kommer skickas till Johannesburg och en till Swaziland, vilka båda är platser där babydumpning är ett omfattande problem. Vi hoppas också att snart kunna installera ett i Masiphumelele samt byta ut vår gamla låda till en av dessa nya. Lådan som skickas till Johannesburg kommer gå till Door of Hope, en organisation som arbetat mot babydumpning sedan flera år tillbaka och inspirerade uppstarten av Baby Safe.
Hello friends!
We’ve been busy with various happenings one of them being visit from Sofia’s family. We’ve also started a course that will enable us to continue our work with the Baby Safe. We’ll be learning about: sustainable development, living out Jesus’ teachings, micro enterprise and working cross-culturally. During this time we’ll continue working with the Baby Safe.
Baby Safe remains eventful and has been able to provide place of safety for two abandoned babies in the last couple of months. While Sofia’s family was here a baby boy of approximately 7 months was left at one of the police stations in the area. We had the privilege to collect the little one and place him in with a foster family. The mother later came forward and the story was a tragic reality of teenage pregnancy, desperate financial struggles and a dysfunctional family situation. We’re now awaiting court proceedings to make a final decision about where the baby shall be placed.
On Thursday at 11.30 a five month old baby girl was left in the baby safe. She’s now safe with a foster family awaiting adoption proceedings.

De senaste månaderna har vi haft fullt upp med olika åtaganden, där höjdpunkten bestod av besök från Sofia’s pappa och syster (klicka här för bilder). Vi har också påbörjat en kurs som kommer möjliggöra fortsatt arbete med Baby Safe och kommer utveckla våra kunskaper inom bl a hållbarhetsutveckling, små företagande i utvecklingsländer, att arbeta i en mångkulturell miljö och att efterfölja Jesus Kristus undervisning.
Baby Safe har under de senaste två månaderna haft förmånen att kunna ge två övergivna bebisar ett nytt tryggt hem. När Sofias familj var här fick vi åka och hämta upp en liten pojke på sju månader på polisstationen och skjutsa honom till ett familjehem. Mamman har nu gett sig till känna och beslutet att lämna hennes bebis präglades bl a av faktorer som tonårsgraviditet, ekonomisk utsatthet, och svåra hemförhållanden. Vi väntar nu på att rätten ska fatta beslut om var bebisen skall placeras.
I Torsdags kl 11.30 på förmiddagen ringde den faktiska Baby Safe lådan upp Baby Safe’s jour telefon. När vår personal kom till platsen fanns mycket riktigt en liten bebis, en flicka på ca 5 månader , i lådan. Flickan är nu i ett familjehem där hon tryggt kan få bo tills adoptionsprocessen är avklarad.
Two days ago we received a call from the police. A schoolchild had found a baby in a field next to the school, not far from where we live.
The baby was alive and taken straight to the hospital, where it was established that the baby was only one day old. This meant we could find the mother from the hospital register. She was arrested, but released later that day and is now awaiting court proceedings.
The mother has decided to keep the baby with support from the Baby Safe Team and family members who will closely monitor the situation.

För två dagar sedan fick vi ett telefonsamtal från polisen. Ett skolbarn hade hittat en bebis i fältet bredvid skolan, i samma område där vi bor.
Bebisen var vid liv och kördes raka vägen till sjukhuset, där man kunde konstatera att bebisen bara var en dag gammal. Genom patient registret kunde man hitta mamman samma dag. Hon var häktad men släpptes senare samma dag och väntar nu på rättegången.
Mamman har bestämt sig för att behålla bebisen, med omfattande stöd från Baby Safe teamet och familjemedlemmar som tillsammans övervakar situationen och ser till att bebisen är i säkerhet.
